What is Price Action Trading?
Price action trading is a method where traders make decisions based purely on what the price is doing on the chart — without relying on technical indicators like RSI, MACD, or Bollinger Bands.
Instead of adding 5-10 indicators to your chart (which often give conflicting signals), price action traders read the candlestick patterns, support and resistance levels, and market structure to understand where the price is likely to go next.
Think of it this way: indicators are like reading yesterday's newspaper to predict today's news. Price action is like watching the news live.
Why Does Price Action Trading Work?
Price action works because it reflects the real-time battle between buyers and sellers. Every candlestick on your chart tells a story:
- A long green candle — buyers dominated, price pushed up strongly
- A long red candle — sellers dominated, price pushed down strongly
- A doji (small body) — indecision, neither side won
- A pin bar (long wick) — rejection, one side tried but got pushed back
When you learn to read these patterns in context (at support levels, at resistance levels, during trends), you can predict the most probable next move with high accuracy.
"The chart already tells you everything. You just need to learn the language." — Mohanraj C
Key Concepts in Price Action
1. Support and Resistance
Support is a price level where buying pressure has historically been strong enough to stop the price from falling further. Resistance is where selling pressure has stopped the price from rising further.
These levels are the foundation of price action trading. Most high-probability trades happen at or near these zones.
2. Candlestick Patterns
Key patterns every price action trader must know:
- Pin Bar — a candle with a long wick and small body, showing rejection of a price level
- Engulfing Pattern — a candle that completely engulfs the previous one, showing a shift in momentum
- Inside Bar — a candle that forms entirely within the previous candle's range, showing consolidation before a breakout
- Doji — a candle with almost no body, showing indecision
3. Trend Structure
Price moves in trends — uptrend (higher highs, higher lows), downtrend (lower highs, lower lows), or sideways (range-bound). Identifying the current trend helps you trade in the right direction.
4. Market Context
A pin bar at a random location means nothing. A pin bar at a key support level, after a pullback in an uptrend, is a high-probability buy signal. Context is everything.
Indicators vs Price Action: Which is Better?
Here's the truth most trading courses won't tell you:
- Indicators are derived from price — they take past price data and run a formula. RSI, MACD, Moving Averages — all of them are just different ways of processing old price data.
- Price action IS the source data — why look at a processed version when you can read the original?
- Indicators lag — by the time an indicator gives a signal, the move has already started (or finished).
- Price action is real-time — you see what's happening right now, not what happened 14 candles ago.
This doesn't mean indicators are useless. Some traders use one or two as confirmation. But the best traders we've seen use price action as their primary decision-making tool.

Price action trading is a method that relies on reading raw price movements — candlestick patterns, support & resistance levels, and market structure — rather than using lagging indicators like RSI or MACD.
Price action gives real-time information from the market, while indicators lag. Many professional traders prefer price action because it helps them react faster. However, some use one or two indicators as confirmation alongside price action.
